German Cockroaches: How to Identify Them and Why They Are Different
Not all cockroaches are the same problem. Of the species that turn up in Sydney homes, the German cockroach is the one that keeps coming back, spreads between neighbouring units and shrugs off supermarket sprays. Almost every apartment kitchen that has been treated three times and still has cockroaches has German cockroaches.
This is the identification guide: what they look like, how to tell them apart from the other species you will see here, why they behave so differently, and why the products on the supermarket shelf so often make the situation worse rather than better.
How to identify a German cockroach
Adults are small. That surprises people, because the cockroach most Sydneysiders picture is the big one that comes up the drain, and that is a different species entirely.
- Size: about 12 mm to 15 mm long as an adult, roughly the size of a fingernail
- Colour: light brown to tan, not the dark reddish brown of the larger species
- The identifying mark: two dark parallel stripes running lengthwise down the shield behind the head. This is the single most reliable feature and it is visible without magnification
- Wings: present and covering the abdomen, but they rarely fly. They will glide a short distance if disturbed from a height
- Nymphs: much darker, almost black, wingless, with a pale stripe down the centre of the back. People often think these are a different insect entirely
- Egg case: a small tan purse about 6 mm to 8 mm long, carried by the female at the end of her body until it is almost ready to hatch
That last point is not a trivia detail. It is the reason this species is so hard to control, and it is covered below.
The species people confuse them with
| Species | Size | Look | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| German cockroach | 12 to 15 mm | Tan, two dark stripes behind the head | Inside, in the kitchen and bathroom, in cracks and appliances |
| American cockroach | 35 to 40 mm | Large, reddish brown, pale margin behind the head | Drains, sewers, grease traps, subfloors, comes inside at night |
| Australian cockroach | 30 to 35 mm | Dark, with a distinct pale yellow stripe along the front edge of each wing | Outdoors, in mulch, under bark, in the garden and the shed |
| Smoky brown cockroach | 30 to 35 mm | Uniformly dark glossy brown, no markings | Roof voids, gutters, trees, comes in through the roof |
The practical rule: a big cockroach on the bathroom floor at 2 am is usually an outdoor species that came in through a drain or a gap. A small tan cockroach in the cutlery drawer at midday means German cockroaches are breeding inside the building. The first is a hygiene and exclusion problem. The second is an infestation.
If it is the large species you are dealing with, our overview of the different types of cockroach problems and the risks each carries is the better starting point.
Why German cockroaches are a different problem
The female carries the egg case until it hatches
Most cockroach species drop the egg case somewhere and leave it. A German cockroach female carries hers, tucked against her body, until the nymphs are almost ready to emerge. Each case holds around 30 to 40 eggs.
The consequence is direct. A treatment that kills adults on contact does not touch the next generation, because the eggs are physically attached to a female who is hiding inside a wall cavity or the motor housing of a dishwasher. Kill the visible population today, and a fortnight later a new wave hatches. This is why cockroach treatments that seemed to work “for a couple of weeks” did not fail. They only ever addressed one generation. We go into that cycle in more depth in why German cockroaches are harder to eliminate than other species, and our guide to cockroach egg sacs covers what the cases look like when you find one.
They live indoors, permanently
The large species live outside and visit. German cockroaches complete their entire life cycle inside the building, in warm humid voids next to food and water: behind the kickboard, inside the fridge motor housing, in the dishwasher, under the sink, in the microwave casing, in the hinge recesses of cupboard doors, in the cavity behind a splashback.
That means outdoor perimeter spraying, which works well against garden species, does essentially nothing to a German cockroach population. The insects are never outside.
They are small enough to live in the cracks
An adult can flatten into a gap a few millimetres wide, and a nymph into far less. They spend the overwhelming majority of their time in harbourage, coming out briefly to feed. Seeing one in daylight is a sign the harbourage is crowded, which usually means the population is well established rather than new.
Why they spread between units
In a freestanding house a German cockroach problem stays in the house. In an apartment block or a terrace conversion it does not, and this is the part that frustrates residents most: the kitchen gets treated, it is clean, and the cockroaches come back anyway.
They move between dwellings through the shared services, which are continuous through the building:
- Plumbing risers and penetrations. Where the waste pipe from a kitchen sink or a bathroom passes through a slab or a wall, the hole is usually larger than the pipe. That gap runs from unit to unit vertically
- Wall cavities shared between kitchens, which in most blocks are stacked directly above one another because that is how the plumbing is designed
- Electrical conduit and switchboard cavities
- Shared bin rooms and rubbish chutes, which act as a permanent reservoir feeding the whole building
- Kickboard voids under a run of cabinetry that continues past a party wall
They also move by being carried: in cardboard boxes, in appliances bought second hand, in grocery packaging, in a moving carton from a previous address. A microwave brought from an infested unit will start a new population in a clean one.
This is the reason we ask about neighbours during an inspection. If a unit is reinfested within weeks of a competent treatment, the source is usually next door, upstairs or in the bin room, and sealing penetrations matters as much as the treatment itself. Our posts on how cockroaches spread through Surry Hills apartments and why Darlinghurst units have the worst cockroach problem look at how this plays out in Sydney’s older inner-city blocks.
Why supermarket sprays fail
This is not a sales point. It is a mechanical explanation, and it matters because the wrong product actively makes the job harder for whoever treats it afterwards.
- Surface sprays do not reach the harbourage. The population is inside the cavity, not on the surface being sprayed. You are treating the road, not the house
- Most retail products are repellent. Cockroaches detect the deposit and move away from it. Spraying around a kitchen does not kill the colony, it disperses it into the wall cavity, the next room and the neighbouring unit. A localised problem becomes a building-wide one
- Bombs and foggers are the worst version of that. The aerosol never penetrates the voids where the insects are, but it is irritating enough to drive them out of the treated space entirely
- Resistance is real. German cockroaches in urban populations have been exposed to the same handful of retail active ingredients for decades, and resistance to common pyrethroids is widespread
- The egg cases are unaffected. Nothing sold in a supermarket reaches a case being carried by a female inside an appliance
What does work is a combination: a non-repellent professional product so the insects walk through it without detecting it, gel bait placed directly into the harbourage points so it is carried back and shared through the population, and an insect growth regulator that stops nymphs reaching breeding age so the next generation cannot rebuild. Our comparison of German cockroach spray versus gel bait explains where each one fits, and the limits of store-bought cockroach remedies covers the rest.
What Pest Power does about German cockroaches
The job is won or lost at the inspection, because the treatment has to go where the insects actually are.
- Species confirmed first. German cockroach and outdoor species need opposite approaches, and treating one as the other wastes a visit
- Harbourage located, which means pulling the kickboard, checking behind and under the fridge and dishwasher, opening the sink cabinet, checking cupboard hinges, the microwave, the kettle base and the pantry corners
- Gel bait placed into the harbourage, not smeared along a skirting board where it does nothing
- A non-repellent residual applied to the runways and voids, and an insect growth regulator to break the breeding cycle
- Entry points identified, including the plumbing penetrations that let a neighbouring unit reinfest yours
- A follow-up timed to the hatch, because the eggs carried during the first visit will hatch afterwards
- A six-month guarantee. If they return inside that window, we come back at no charge
- Same-day and after-hours attendance across Sydney, and general pest treatments from $89, with the price confirmed before anything starts

Common questions about German cockroaches
Does a clean kitchen prevent German cockroaches
It slows them down and it makes bait more attractive, because there is less competing food. It does not prevent them. They need very little, and a spotless unit next to an infested one will still get them through the plumbing.
How long does it take to get rid of them
Expect the visible population to drop within days and the job to need a follow-up after the next hatch. A single visit rarely finishes an established German cockroach infestation, and any operator promising otherwise is not being straight with you.
Can German cockroaches make you sick
They carry bacteria on their bodies from the drains and voids they travel through, they contaminate food surfaces, and their shed skins and droppings are a recognised asthma and allergy trigger, particularly in children. We covered this in can cockroaches make you sick.
Why do I only see them at night
They avoid light and spend most of their time in harbourage. Seeing them during the day usually means the harbourage is full, which points to a larger population rather than a smaller one.
Should I throw out the appliance they are living in
Usually not. A technician can treat inside an appliance without destroying it. Do not move an infested appliance to another property, because that is one of the most common ways a new unit gets infested.
