How a Termite Reticulation System Works
Subterranean termites travel through the soil looking for hidden ways into a building, such as slab cracks, plumbing gaps and timber near the ground. A reticulation system places perforated pipes in the soil along the external walls, and under paths and paving where it’s installed before they are laid.
When the system is charged, termiticide is pumped through the pipes and spreads into the surrounding soil, forming a continuous treated zone. When the product reaches the end of its effective life, the system is refilled through the access points instead of trenching and drilling again.
A reticulation system reduces the risk of termites entering undetected. It doesn’t make a home termite-proof, and it isn’t a substitute for regular inspections.
Reticulation Systems for New Builds and Existing Homes
New Homes and Extensions
Pipes are laid around the slab before paths, driveways and landscaping go in, then charged once construction ends. This suits homes where most of the perimeter ends up under concrete.
Existing Homes
Where garden beds and open soil run along the external walls, pipes can be retrofitted alongside them. Future refills then go through access points instead of repeated trenching and drilling.
Renovations and New Paving
Adding paths, a patio or landscaping against the house is a good time to install pipes. Laid before the new surface goes down, they allow future refills without lifting concrete.
Our Termite Reticulation System Installation Process
Inspection First
Every job starts with a termite inspection of the house, subfloor, roof void and garden. Active termites are treated before any system is installed.
Written Quote
We measure the perimeter, check what will be paved or landscaped, and give you a written quote before any work is booked.
Laying the Pipes
Pipes are laid in a trench along the external walls and connected to access points that stay accessible for future refills.
Charging the System
Once construction and landscaping are finished, termiticide is pumped through the system at the rate on the product label.
Records and Notice
You receive written details of the system, the product used, the access point locations and when the next refill or inspection is due, with a notice fixed where applicable.
Termite Reticulation System Refills in Sydney
The termiticide in a reticulation system breaks down in the soil over time, so the system needs refilling to keep the treated zone working. How often depends on the product used and its label directions, and your records show when the next refill is due.
A reticulation system refill is quicker and tidier than installing a new barrier. We locate and check the access points, confirm the system is in working order, pump fresh termiticide through the pipes at the label rate and update your records.
We also refill reticulation systems installed by builders or other pest control companies, as long as the access points can be found and the system is in working order. If part of the system is damaged, we’ll explain the repair or re-treatment options before any work goes ahead.
What Affects the Cost of a Termite Reticulation System
Every termite reticulation system is quoted after an inspection, because the layout of each home and site is different. These are the main factors that affect the price.
Perimeter Length
The longer the external walls, the more pipe, fittings and termiticide the system needs. A compact townhouse needs far less material and labour than a large family home on a corner block.
New Build or Retrofit
Installing during construction is usually simpler because the pipes go in before paths and landscaping. Retrofitting an established home means working around existing gardens, paving and services, which can add time.
Access Points
Access points let the system be charged and refilled without disturbing the ground. The number needed depends on the layout of the home, and more access points add to installation and refill time.
Termiticide Chosen
Different registered termiticides vary in price, and their labels set different rates and refill intervals. The product recommended for your home affects both the upfront cost and the cost of maintaining the system.
You’ll receive a written quote showing exactly what’s included before any work is booked.
Termite Reticulation Safety and Standards
APVMA-Registered Termiticides
Termiticides used in Australia must be registered by the APVMA, and each label sets out how they can be used.
Applied to the Product Label
Charging and refill rates follow the product label. Keep children and pets off treated soil until it has dried.
Australian Standards
Termite management for new building work is covered by AS 3660.1, and for existing homes by AS 3660.2. New homes also need a durable notice recording the system installed.

How to Maintain Your Termite Reticulation System
A reticulation system only protects your home while the pipes and treated zone stay intact and the system is refilled on time.
Keep Access Points Clear
Access points are where the system is charged and refilled. Keep them uncovered by soil, mulch, pavers or pot plants, and note where they are so they can be found at refill time.
Avoid Digging Along the Walls
The pipes sit in the soil close to the external walls. Digging new garden beds, planting trees or installing edging there can damage the pipes and disturb the treated zone, so check with us first.
Tell Us Before Renovating
Extensions, new plumbing, decks and paving can cut through pipes or cover part of the treated zone. Let us know before work starts so the system can be protected, extended or reconnected where needed.
Keep Mulch Below the Slab Edge
Soil, mulch and timber sleepers built up against the house can give termites a hidden path over the treated zone. Keep them below the slab edge and clear of weep holes so activity stays visible.
Book Refills and Annual Inspections
Book the refill when your records say it's due, and keep up annual termite inspections. Regular inspections pick up bridging, gaps in the treated zone or new termite activity before it becomes serious damage.
Keep Your Records
Keep the system details, access point locations and refill dates with your home documents. They show when the next refill is due and help any future buyer or builder understand the system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a reticulation system better than a standard chemical barrier?
A reticulation system is a way of applying a chemical barrier. It makes later re-treatment easier where paths and paving surround the house. For many established homes with open garden beds, a standard chemical termite barrier may be all that’s needed, and your technician will recommend what suits the site.
How often does a reticulation system need refilling?
It depends on the termiticide used and its label directions. Your records show the product and when the next refill is due.
Can you refill a system another company installed?
Usually, yes, if the access points can be found and the system is in working order. We check it first.
Can a reticulation system be installed in an existing home?
Often, yes, where there’s open soil along the walls. Areas already under concrete may need drilling and injection instead.
Will a reticulation system get rid of termites already in my house?
No. It’s designed to stop termites reaching the house through the soil. An active infestation needs its own treatment first, and an inspection confirms what’s needed.
Is it safe for children and pets?
Registered termiticides are applied into the soil by licensed technicians according to the label. Keep children and pets off treated areas until the soil has dried.
How much does a termite reticulation system cost?
It depends on the perimeter, whether it’s a new build or a retrofit, the number of access points and the product used. We provide a written quote after an inspection.
