Why Fleas Come Back After You Have Treated Them
The fleas you can see are the small minority. In a home with an established population, most of what is present is not adult fleas at all — it is eggs, larvae and pupae sitting down in the carpet pile, in the gaps between floorboards, in the subfloor sand, under lino, in the lounge cushions and in the pet’s bedding. Kill the adults on the surface and the rest of that population simply matures over the following days and weeks.
The stage that defeats most do-it-yourself attempts is the pupa. Inside its cocoon it is physically protected, it does not feed, and it can sit dormant for months waiting for a signal that a host has arrived. Supermarket foggers and bombs do not reach into carpet pile or under furniture at all, so the pupae are untouched and the problem reappears about a fortnight later, which is when people usually call us.

The Four Stages and Why Each One Matters
Eggs
Laid on the animal and dropped wherever it walks, rests and sleeps. They are not sticky, so they roll down into carpet pile, floorboard gaps and soft furnishings within minutes. This is why the pet's favourite sleeping spots, the hallway it uses and the couch are the highest-load areas in the house, not the room where you noticed the bites.
Larvae
Blind, they avoid light and they burrow down away from the surface, feeding on organic debris and on the droppings of adult fleas. Because they move away from light, they concentrate under furniture, along skirting lines, beneath the edges of rugs and in the subfloor — the exact areas a quick vacuum of the open floor never touches.
Pupae
The resistant stage, and the reason flea problems recur. The cocoon is sticky, it collects debris and camouflages itself, and it shields the developing flea. It can remain dormant for months and emerges in response to warmth, vibration and carbon dioxide — in other words, in response to somebody walking past.
Adults
The only stage you see, and typically a small share of the total population in the building. They feed within hours of emerging and begin laying quickly. Bites usually appear around the ankles and lower legs on people, and around the base of the tail and the belly on pets.
Fleas in an Empty House and After a Holiday
One of the most common calls we take is from someone who has just moved into a rental or a newly purchased home and been bitten around the ankles in the hallway within a day or two. Nobody in the household has a pet, the carpets look clean, and it makes no sense until you know how the pupal stage behaves.
When the previous occupants and their animals left, the adult fleas died out without a host, but the pupae stayed. Sitting dormant in the carpet, they wait. Then the removalists arrive, the floor gets walked on, the heating goes on, and the vibration, warmth and carbon dioxide bring them out together — which is why the problem in an empty house arrives as a wave rather than as a gradual build-up.
The same thing happens on a smaller scale when a family goes away for a few weeks and comes back to a house that seems suddenly full of fleas. Nothing has changed except that the hosts left and then returned. Both scenarios respond well to treatment precisely because the population is concentrated in the floor coverings rather than spread across a live animal.
Preparing the House So the Treatment Works
Vacuum thoroughly, then bin the bag
Vacuum carpets, rugs, floorboard gaps, under and behind furniture, along skirtings and the couch seams the day of the treatment. The vibration also brings pupae out of dormancy, which is exactly what you want just before a treatment goes down. Empty the canister or bag into an outside bin immediately.
Wash bedding hot and clear the floors
Pet bedding, throw rugs, blankets and washable covers go through a hot wash. Pick up toys, shoes, boxes and clothing from the floor so the treated surface is actually the floor and not the clutter on it. Move light furniture away from the walls where you can.
Treat the pet the same day
This is the one that determines whether the job holds. An untreated animal is a walking source of new eggs and will reseed a perfectly good treatment inside a week. Use a product your vet recommends for that animal, timed for the same day. We treat the building; the vet treats the animal.
Open up the yard and subfloor
Mow, and cut back long grass and shaded garden beds along the paths the pet uses. Under the house matters just as much — a dry, sandy subfloor where a dog sleeps is prime larval habitat. Unlock the side gate and clear access to the subfloor entry and the garage.
Rentals, End of Lease and Getting a Property Ready
A great deal of our flea work is tied to a lease ending. Many residential tenancy agreements in New South Wales include a clause requiring a professional flea treatment where an animal has been kept at the property, and agents will usually ask for a receipt at the final inspection. Read your own agreement rather than assuming, because the wording varies and not every lease includes it.
Where that applies, the treatment is best done after the property is empty and the carpets have been cleaned, not before. An empty floor lets a technician treat the full carpeted area rather than working around furniture, and it avoids paying for a treatment that a steam clean then lifts straight back out.
