Flies Are a Symptom. The Job Is Finding the Source
Spraying adult flies buys you a few hours. Every fly in the room came from something moist and organic that is breeding them, usually within a short distance, and until that source is found and removed the numbers simply rebuild. This is the single thing that separates fly work that holds from fly work that has to be repeated every week.
The useful first question is not how to kill them but which fly it is, because each species points at a different source. Small dark flies staggering around a floor waste are telling you something quite different from a dozen large sluggish blowflies at an upstairs window. Get the identification right and the search area usually narrows to a couple of metres.

Which Fly You Actually Have
House fly
The generalist. Breeds in decaying organic matter — bin bases, compost, animal waste, food debris in a floor drain, spillage under equipment. Numbers build fast in warm weather and it travels readily between properties, so a neighbouring bin store or a poultry run can be the actual source of a problem inside your building.
Blowfly
Metallic blue or green, large and noisy, and typically found in ones and twos at a window upstairs. A sudden cluster of them indoors is a strong indicator of a dead animal — usually a rat or possum in the roof void or a wall cavity. The flies are the symptom; the carcass is the job.
Drain or moth fly
Tiny, fuzzy, heart-shaped wings, hovering in short hops near a floor waste, a shower drain, a grease trap or a mop sink. They breed in the biofilm lining the inside of the pipe. Bleach runs straight past it, which is why the problem returns; the film has to be physically broken down and the drain treated.
Vinegar and fruit fly
Small, tan, hovering over fruit bowls, bins, recycling crates, beer lines and mop buckets. They breed in anything fermenting, including the residue in the bottom of an empty bottle crate or a poorly rinsed drip tray. Removing the ferment is most of the treatment.
Where the Breeding Source Usually Turns Out to Be
In a commercial kitchen, the answer is nearly always a floor waste, the grease trap, the underside of a bench or fridge where spillage has run and dried, or the bin store outside the back door. Drip trays under fridges and ice machines are a persistent one, because nobody thinks of them as a wet organic surface until they are pulled out.
In a house, look at the kitchen bin, the recycling crate, the compost, the green waste bin, pot plant saucers holding stale water, a chook pen, and pet waste in the yard. A rarely used bathroom or laundry floor waste is a classic drain fly source because the trap dries out and the biofilm keeps going regardless.
When blowflies appear indoors in numbers with no food source to explain them, the search moves into the roof void and the wall cavities. Rodent baiting and possum activity both produce carcasses in inaccessible places, and the fly cluster at the window is often the first anyone knows about it. That work overlaps with rodent control and possum removal rather than being a fly job at all.

Fly presence is a compliance issue
In a food business, flies are not just unpleasant — they are a finding. Councils and auditors treat visible fly activity in a food handling area as a hygiene failure, and the remedy expected is documented control, not an aerosol behind the counter. Keeping records of servicing matters as much as the servicing itself.
Insect light traps, placed properly
A light trap works when it is out of direct daylight, away from food preparation surfaces, at the right height, and positioned to intercept flies coming in rather than to draw them further into the room. A unit above a bench is worse than no unit at all. Catch trays also need emptying on a schedule to stay useful.
Doors, screens and air movement
Most flies in a kitchen walked in through a propped back door. Strip curtains on a delivery door, an air curtain on a customer entrance, self-closers, and screens on openable windows do more for fly numbers than any chemical. Gaps under roller doors are the other standing problem.
Drains, grease traps and bin stores
Scheduled drain treatment to break down the biofilm, a grease trap serviced often enough, bins with lids that actually close, and a wash-down routine for the bin store itself. Move the bin store further from the door if you possibly can — distance is free and it works.
Fly Problems in Sydney Homes
Domestic fly pressure in Sydney is seasonal and largely outdoor-driven. Numbers climb from spring, peak through summer, and drop away sharply once the weather turns. Warm, still, humid days after rain are when people notice them most, and coastal properties get an extra push whenever the wind comes off the water and pins flies against the building.
The fixes are unglamorous and effective: bins with closing lids kept away from the back door, bin bases hosed out rather than just emptied, compost turned and covered, pet waste picked up daily, fruit not left out, and fly screens that actually seal. Where a treatment is warranted, surface applications to the sunny walls, fences and eaves that flies rest on do more than spraying into the air.
