Why a Wasp Nest Is Not a Job to Take On Yourself
A bee leaves its sting behind and dies. A wasp does not. It can sting again and again, and a disturbed nest will put dozens of defenders into the air within seconds. That single difference is why wasp work is handled at the nest, at the right time of day, by someone in the right gear — and why a can of surface spray from the hardware shop so often turns a manageable problem into a trip to hospital.
Colonies in Sydney build through spring and early summer and reach their largest and most defensive around late summer and autumn, which is when most of our call-outs come in. A nest that was a golf ball in October can hold thousands of workers by March. The nest itself is often the last thing anyone sees: what people notice first is a steady line of traffic in and out of one spot in the eaves, a hole in the lawn, or a gap in the brickwork.
Wasps are not protected wildlife in New South Wales, so an active nest can be treated where it sits. Honey bees are a different matter. A swarm hanging in a tree, or a hive established in a wall cavity, is worth a beekeeper’s attention before anyone reaches for an insecticide, and we will tell you plainly if that is what you actually have rather than treating it as a wasp job.
Working Out What You Are Looking At
European wasp
Introduced, yellow and black, and the species behind most of the aggressive call-outs. It builds concealed nests — in wall cavities, roof voids, retaining walls and holes in the ground — so you usually see the flight path long before the nest. Unlike bees they are drawn to meat, pet food and sweet drinks, which is why they turn up at barbecues and around bins.
Paper wasp
Native, slimmer, longer-legged, and the one hanging under a pergola beam, a window awning or the lip of a letterbox. The nest is an open grey comb on a short stalk with no outer casing. Paper wasps are far less aggressive than European wasps but will defend the comb if you walk or mow within about a metre of it.
Mud dauber
The solitary wasp that leaves finger-thick mud tubes on brickwork, under eaves and inside sheds and garages. It does not form a defending colony and is not a stinging risk in the way the social species are. Most mud dauber calls are really about the mess and the staining, and the nests can simply be scraped off once vacated.
Honey bee, not a wasp
Furry rather than glossy, moving in a dense cluster rather than individual patrols, and often found as a swarm resting on a branch or fence for a day or two. Swarms usually move on by themselves. An established hive inside a wall or roof is a different job again, and one where a beekeeper should get the first call.
Where Nests Turn Up in Sydney Properties
Roof voids and the boxed ends of eaves are the most common concealed sites we open up, usually entered through a gap at the soffit line or a lifted tile. Wall cavities come next, with the entry point at a weep hole, an air-conditioning penetration or a split in the render. Both are awkward because the visible entry can sit metres away from where the comb actually is.
Outdoors, European wasps favour holes in the ground: an old rodent burrow at the base of a retaining wall, a cavity under a garden step, or the void behind a sandstone block wall. Paper wasps stay in the open and pick pergolas, verandah beams, clothes-line frames, meter boxes, barbecue hoods, trampoline frames and the underside of outdoor furniture.
The sites that cause the most trouble are the ones near daily traffic — above a back door, beside a pool gate, inside a children’s play area, or in the lawn where the mower goes. Those are the jobs we prioritise for a same-day attendance, and it is worth roping the area off and keeping pets away until a technician has been.
The Risks That Make This Urgent

Because a wasp does not lose its sting, a single insect can deliver several stings in a few seconds and keep going. Numbers matter more than in a bee incident, and someone who disturbs a large nest can take a serious dose very quickly.
Allergic reaction
A sting can cause a severe allergic reaction in people who have never reacted before. Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness or a spreading rash after a sting is a medical emergency — call triple zero. A defended radius, not just the nest
European wasps will respond to vibration and movement well away from the entrance. Mowing, whipper-snipping, using a leaf blower or working on a ladder near the nest is enough to trigger a mass response, which is how most stings actually happen.
Failed do-it-yourself attempts
Surface sprays, boiling water, petrol and blocking the entry hole all share the same outcome: the colony is agitated, the workers are still alive, and in a wall or roof they simply chew a new exit — often into the room on the other side. A half-treated nest is more dangerous than an untouched one.
How the Nest Job Runs
The first part of the visit is watching. Finding the true entry point matters more than anything else on a wasp job, because product applied to the wrong void does nothing at all. A technician will track the flight line back to the opening, identify the species from the traffic and the nest structure, and then decide the approach from there.
Timing is deliberate. Wasps return to the nest overnight, so early morning and dusk attendances put the maximum number of insects in the one place and mean fewer stragglers foraging in the garden. Where the nest is over a doorway, a play area or a pool gate, we will usually ask you to keep the area clear for the rest of the day.
Nest material is removed where it can be reached safely — an exposed paper wasp comb, or a nest in an accessible part of a roof void. Nests deep inside a wall cavity are generally treated in place and left, because opening the wall causes more damage than the remaining comb ever will.
