North Shore
Two Very Different Halves of One Region
We treat the North Shore as one service area with two distinct halves, because the work genuinely differs. The Lower North Shore runs from the harbour at Kirribilli and Milsons Point back through Cammeray, Cremorne, Naremburn and Wollstonecraft to the apartment core at Crows Nest, St Leonards and Chatswood. The Upper North Shore is Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby country: Roseville, Killara, Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra, Warrawee, Wahroonga, Waitara, Normanhurst, Asquith, Hornsby, Mount Colah and Mount Kuring-gai.
Down low, the defining feature is density. The towers and older walk-ups around Chatswood, St Leonards and Crows Nest have shared risers and waste stacks, which is where German cockroaches live, and a hospital, university and corporate rental market that turns over constantly, which is how bed bugs travel. The harbourside homes at Kirribilli, Cremorne and Cammeray are a different job again — older, timber-framed, with mature gardens and sandstone.
Up top, the defining feature is bush. Heavy tree canopy, deep leaf litter, large blocks and reserve boundaries running through Hornsby, Mount Colah, Mount Kuring-gai and Asquith give the Upper North Shore the heaviest termite pressure of anywhere we work in Sydney. If you own a house up here, an annual timber pest inspection is not optional maintenance — it is the cheapest insurance available.
The Pests That Dominate Our North Shore Work
Subterranean termites, especially up top
Canopy, litter, moisture and a long history of untreated timber all favour subterranean termites, and the reserves supply a continuous population. The specific local risks are garden beds and mulch built up above the slab edge, weep holes buried by soil, timber retaining walls, and stumps left after tree removal.
Brushtail possums in roof cavities
Bushy gullies running down to Middle Harbour and Lane Cove, and the reserve boundaries up top, put possums against roofs across the whole region. They are protected native wildlife: under NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service licence conditions a trapped possum must be released unharmed, after sunset, on the property of capture and within 150 metres. Proofing the roof is the only durable answer.
Rats along fence lines and powerlines
Roof rats travel the reserve boundary, the fence line, the powerline and the branches touching your roof, then enter through a lifted tile or a gap at the eave. Ground baiting does very little against an animal that never comes down. Cutting back overhanging branches and proofing the roofline is what changes it.
German cockroaches in the apartment core
Chatswood, St Leonards and Crows Nest have the density and the shared services that let German cockroaches move between units. As in any high-rise, treating one apartment while the stack goes untreated does not hold, which is why this work is best organised through the strata or building manager.
Why the Upper North Shore Has Sydney's Worst Termite Pressure
It is a combination of things, and each one alone would be manageable. Heavy canopy keeps the ground shaded and damp. Deep leaf litter holds moisture against the soil. Large blocks mean more trees, more stumps and more landscape timber. Reserve boundaries supply established colonies that were there long before the houses were. And a lot of the housing stock predates modern termite management entirely.
Then there is the landscaping. Ku-ring-gai gardens are beautiful and they are frequently built in a way that defeats the building’s own defences: garden beds raised above the slab edge, mulch banked against the brickwork, weep holes buried, retaining walls made of sleepers set into the ground, and irrigation running along the perimeter. Every one of those gives termites a concealed path in that no visual inspection can follow.
The fix is unglamorous. Pull the soil and mulch back below the slab edge and off the weep holes, keep the perimeter clear and inspectable, remove or treat stumps, keep timber out of ground contact, and have the property inspected every year. Lower North Shore Specifics
Harbourside homes and mature gardens
Kirribilli, Milsons Point, Cremorne, Cammeray and Naremburn hold older timber-framed homes with subfloors, sandstone footings and heavily planted gardens. The pest profile is closer to the Inner West than to Chatswood: termites through the subfloor, spiders in the sandstone and retaining walls, rats through mature trees.
The apartment and hospital corridor
St Leonards, Crows Nest and Chatswood combine towers, older walk-ups, a hospital precinct and a large corporate and student rental market. High turnover is exactly how bed bugs move, and shared services are exactly how German cockroaches move. Both need a building-level response.
Sandstone and funnel-webs
Sandstone outcrops, rock retaining walls and rockeries through the harbourside suburbs provide good funnel-web and redback habitat. Males wander after summer rain and turn up in garages, laundries and pools, which is when most spider call-outs come in.
Bushy gullies down to the harbour
The gullies running toward Middle Harbour and Lane Cove bring possums, rats and snakes close to houses. Snakes are a job for a licensed snake catcher rather than a pest controller, and we will tell you that rather than attend.

Ku-ring-gai Gardens and What You Can Actually Change
A lot of the highest-value termite prevention on the Upper North Shore costs nothing but a Saturday. Pull soil and mulch back below the slab edge and off the weep holes. Keep a clear, inspectable strip of at least a hand’s width around the perimeter of the building. Move firewood stacks, timber offcuts and stored sleepers off the ground and away from the walls. Fix the leaking tap and redirect the downpipe that has been discharging against the footing for years.
Trees are more complicated. Most Sydney councils control the removal and significant pruning of established trees, and Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby take that seriously, so check with your council before acting rather than after. What you can usually do without consent is cut back the branches physically touching your roof, which is the single most effective thing there is against roof rats.
Stumps are the one people miss. A stump left after a tree comes out is a large mass of dying timber sitting in damp ground within metres of the house, and it is exactly what a colony wants. Grinding it out, or having it treated, removes a food source that would otherwise be feeding activity right against your foundations for years.
Timber retaining walls, sleeper garden edges, deck posts set into the ground and pergola uprights bedded in concrete that has cracked are all in the same category: untreated or inadequately treated timber in ground contact, close to the building. Replacing them is the permanent answer; where that is not practical, they become the areas an inspector checks first.
Working on Steep Bush Blocks
Access before we arrive
Many Upper North Shore blocks fall away steeply behind the house, and the perimeter a technician needs to treat may sit two metres below the back deck. Clearing a route down, unlocking gates and cutting back growth against the wall makes a real difference to how thoroughly the job can be done.
Roof and subfloor entry
Manholes on these houses are often inside a wardrobe or above a stairwell, and subfloor entries can be down the slope at the low side. Knowing where both are before the visit saves time. If you have never been into either, say so — that is worth knowing in itself.
Bushfire asset protection zones
Properties backing onto reserve land frequently have cleared APZ requirements, which is good news for pest work because it keeps vegetation off the building. Where the zone has been let go, restoring it does as much for rodents and termites as it does for fire risk.
Wildlife you should not call us about
Snakes need a licensed snake catcher. Injured native animals need a wildlife rescue organisation. Bees are better handled by a beekeeper. We would rather point you to the right service than attend and be the wrong one.
